Notes
Note: Mics are thought to have been Nak 300's, although it may be
mis-remembered; in any event the recording is great, thanks Jon!
Big explosions during Don't Ease, those were re-transferred at 10db
lower and patched back into the main source to make it less jarring.
Patches from ID-13301: crowd after FOTM 11:11 > Lost Sailor 0:05,
Jam 1:43 > 1:54, and Drums 0:15 > Space 0:11 (7:43).

Subject: Even Kiel
This show is on some best-of-year lists for the end of the 1st set and first half of the 2nd. They had played the Kiel Auditorium a year and a half ... prior, and would be back again in a year. Though called an auditorium, it was a 10,000-seat arena with a proscenium on one end. Not great for acoustics. This is AUD-only, and good sources just didn't exist for many years – though the playing is in there. While May has a string of great shows, the July '81 tour [8 stops, 9 shows] isn't the best of the year, which just makes this stand out. After a break they did the second half (the August tour of western U.S.), coming back with better shows overall. But on this stop they play briskly (almost) all night and the second set sees them hitting several highpoints.
First Set. Basic '81 with a strong Peggy-O, until a middling Althea. Well downtempo, Jer doing the minimum seems to make things drift. While Bobby muffs the next couple, Jer's better for Me & My Uncle, and Brent is great. Plus, check Jer barging into the end solo of Big River. He gets lost in a perfunctory Dough Knees, repeating a verse, but then it all gets strapped down for a punchy Minglewood Blues [St. Louis girls/St. Louis City]. China Cat has a brisk start, motors solidly, then the jam gets quite good. Listen for Phil bombs – remember, in person these would rip right through you, and make everyone wide-eyed. The fast Rider has the best playing of the set. See if you can tell what's (a bit) different about this arrangement.
Second Set. Scarlet is great at this night's tempo, and it has a unique jam; because it doesn't go where you probably think it's going to. Partner Fire on the Mountain then crushes. Lost Sailor starts uptempo, then slows, but Bobby is also stepping up this set, leading a sweet Saint of Circumstance (which also takes off at a sprint ... "driving for a Chevrolet"?). Usually, Stranger or Half-Step went into Franklin's at the time. So here we have one of a slightly different flavor, with a cool, washout jam. After a great intro, Not Fade falls asleep after halfway. Wharf Rat is solid enough, though the two solos get little traction. To leave 'em happy, the brisk set ends with an effortless Sugar Magnolia, and Jer is still amped for U.S. Blues.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: B+
Overall = 3¾ stars
Highlights:
China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider – first set peaks on the latter
Scarlet Begonias – left-turn jam
Fire on the Mountain – crushes
Saint of Circumstance – a Chevy sprint
Sugar Magnolia – effortless
U.S. Blues – Jer amped
SOURCES: The 134092_nak300_bernstein is the first to be truly listenable. It's patched and the sound improves during the second set. Just EQ for lows/highs and re-balance and it's a fine AUD. The 139979_fob_senn421 is more distant sounding, with less punch.

It's been a long time coming, but finally there is a solid sounding aud of this solid show. Kind of a middle of the pack show for this July 81 tour, which
...
is to say, it's good if not great. After an average 1st set, Scarlet is a highlight. Franklins before drums is an interesting placement. Post drums is well played, with a particularly fiery Sugar Mag. Thanks for taping and uploading. I never thought I would get to hear this show in listenable aud form.
